Features of Deep Foundation Engineering

With the rapid development of the city and the continuous improvement of the level of science and technology, the utilization rate of human beings to urban space continues to rise, from the ground to the underground, with more and more buildings, deeper foundations, and more and more complex underground pipelines. This has resulted in the development of many deep foundation projects. However, deep foundation engineering is advanced, and practical experience is ahead of theoretical knowledge. As a result, current theories cannot fully support actual engineering. Therefore, current deep foundation engineering urgently needs more in-depth research.


According to the management measures issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China, the following two types of foundation projects are regulated as deep foundation projects:

(1) Excavation of earthwork construction, support structure, and drainage work for a foundation whose actual excavation depth exceeds 5m (including 5m).

(2) Although the actual excavation depth of the construction does not exceed 5 meters, the geological conditions, surrounding natural environment and underground pipelines are complex, or the earthwork construction excavation and support of the foundation adjacent to the building safety are affected.


Deep Foundation Engineering has the following characteristics:

(1)   Foundation support is a temporary structure which is generally to stabilize the soil around the foundation to ensure the progress of underground construction operations. When the backfilling is completed, its function ends. Due to this temporary nature, the safety reserve is small and the risk is high during design. The foundation should be monitored during the construction stage. Once the data exceeds the design warning value, measures and remedies should be taken immediately.

(2)   Geology has strong spatial and temporal characteristics, and different periods and environments have different characteristics. Therefore, foundation engineering is regional, and there may be large differences in geology in different regions, or even in small areas such as the same street. Therefore, the foundation support needs to be designed according to local conditions, and the regional nature of the foundation project should be fully considered.

(3)  Foundation engineering is comprehensive. Foundation engineering not only includes soil mechanics and structural mechanics, but also the integration of testing technology, computing technology, construction machinery, and construction technology.

(4)   Foundation engineering has strong characteristics. The design and construction of the foundation support structure and earthwork excavation must not only consider the engineering geological hydrogeological conditions, but also the location of adjacent buildings (structures) and underground pipelines, the ability to resist deformation, and the surrounding site conditions. Especially in cities with crowded working surfaces, protecting the safety of adjacent buildings (structures) and municipal facilities is the key to the design and construction of foundation engineering.

(5)   The calculation of the safety factor based on classical mechanics and soil mechanics in foundation engineering is still limited and one-sided. In the foundation support structure, the displacement of support piles is not only affected by active earth pressure, but also by time changes. When designers use soil mechanics calculations, many parameter values are estimated based on engineering experience. Therefore, further research is needed for foundation engineering.
